"Les Charnieres" is a less-than-half-hectare Premier Cru site that sits just above another 1er Cru Les Lavieres in the limestone tenderloin of Savigny. The vines were planted in the 1950s in limestone soil - both points being particularly important for the 2023 release as Neal Martin from Vinous explains: "Limestone soils counter-balanced the richness that manifested during those two heatwaves, which is important because pH levels tend to be a little higher in 2023. Also, vine age had a notable effect in terms of naturally regulating yields." The 2023 shows tons of beautiful florals and delicious bright red fruits (red cherry, raspberry), great acidity and a mint-like freshness that is really, really attractive. The tannins are supple and soft...on the whole this is incredibly inviting and checks every box you could hope for in classic 1er Cru Savigny.
